Rafael Gianan, son of the late Zoilo and Consolacion Gianan, brother of Lolita, Elena, Salve, Romulo and Minda was born September 20, 1945.

Paeng, as my husband was fondly called, joined his Creator on May 13, 2017. He had a cardiac arrest on the 3rd day post triple bypass surgery. He went peacefully with the Lord - his face as if just sleeping. The following kept him occupied - his BBQ grill & smoker, his yard and his family. The man was fond of cooking. On a lazy Saturday or Sunday afternoon he'd ask me to call friends over for dinner. Give him two hours and he'll come up with a simple yet sumptuous dinner. BBQ ribs, steak or grilled fish paired with chicken tinola, sinigang, munggo (with his fave chicharon or tokwa), pancit or laing. Freezer is well stocked up! Costco, HEB and Home Depot are his favorite places to shop at. Give him advanced notice and he'll make you paella (had to buy a paella pan one time we were at William Sonoma). He fixed the backyard the weekend prior to surgery, probably knowing that people will be coming over. He's Paeng, Pako, Kuya, Tito or Uncle or Ninong or Lolo Paeng, Lolo Ping to his San Francisco grandchildren (from nieces). He's Dad & Papa to Matthew and me.

The outpouring of condolences via texts, phone calls and messages on my Facebook timeline show how much the guy was loved by so many. For that we are so very grateful.

Rest now Papa. Join our Creator where you are free of pain, where you don't need to check your blood sugar three times a day, where you don't need to inject insulin before or after meals, where you don't need to check your blood pressure and where there is Eternal Peace.

We love you. We miss you already.

Mai and Matt
